Get Caught Reading
Reading is essential to those who apply themselves. Reading can allow your mind to enter places you may never physically explore. It can tap into your emotional database, causing you to become more empathetic and to release some stress. Whether you choose a fiction or nonfiction book, love stories, graphic novels, or informational books, there is something for everybody.
The month of May is being recognized as “Get Caught Reading Month,” a nationwide initiative to increase literacy in all ages. The idea is to encourage people to get “caught” reading; whether it is outside, at the library, in school, at a bookstore, or a coffee shop.
Reading matters in a world filled with constant scrolling, multiple notifications, and all things virtual. Diving into a book increases your focus, imagination, and connection. It also builds confidence in children and increases their vocabulary.
How can you celebrate this month? Here are a couple of ways:
- Start a reading challenge. Or you can enroll in Mayor Deegan’s River City Readers Challenge by downloading the FREE Beanstackapp. The goal is to read 20 minutes a day and log your progress.
- Share your reading spot on social media using #GetCaughtReading.
- Visit any one of the Jacksonville Public Libraries. They host reading programs, author events, book clubs, and several activities for kids and teens.
- Read together as a family. This creates meaningful moments and helps children to develop a positive relationship from an early age.
- Support independent bookstores such as Happy Medium Book Cafe, Chamblin Bookmine, or The Literary Lounge.
Grab a book, find a comfortable spot, and open up your books. You could inspire the next person to start reading. Also, summer is coming up, which is the perfect time for kids to grab a book or two, cozy up, and dive in. The Jacksonville Public Library is presenting Summer at the Library, UnEarth A Story, where students can join them for themed crafts, special guests, giveaways, parties, and more. All kids will receive a free book, reading trackers, reading dragons starter set of cards, and a ticket for the Jacksonville Waves. UnEarth A Story kicks off June 1st.
