African American Music Month
Celebration of diversity, history, and music
Jazz. Hip hop. Rhythm & Blues. Rap.
Sounds birthed by African Americans. Artists such aa Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, and Etta James pushed musical boundaries and created a lane of their own. Their influences can be heard in other genres such as rock ‘n’ roll, pop, and country music.
This and every June celebrates and honors African American Music Month, a time to reflect on and celebrate the impact of Black musicians, composers, songwriters, and innovators. Originally known as “Black Music Month” by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, it was later officially designated by Congress in 2000. And in 2009, President Barack Obama renamed it to African American Music Month.
African American music has a rich history tied to it. Artists included tales of slavery and racism and fighting for basic human rights. When struggles arose, music was one thing that kept people together, especially with hymns, spirituals, and gospel music. Over the years, Black musicians have reach new levels with their musical creativity and breaking record charts.
African American music has also been a vehicle for protest and political expression. The civil rights movement echoes with the voices of Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, and Curtis Mayfield. Today, artists like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and H.E.R. are using their platforms to challenge injustice and uplift communities.
Music remains a force that brings people together and African Americans continue to bridge the gap between generations. This month is not only bout honoring the past but showing homage to those who continue to create meaningful tunes that everyone can enjoy. All month, local organizers have held The Pop Out, which showcases powerful performances by local Black artists at Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park, in tribute to the influence of James Weldon Johnson and the community he called home. The next Pop Out is this Sunday, June 29th from 5:00 to 8:00p.m. There will be live music, food trucks, and local vendors. So come out and enjoy the fun!
